Survivor: American Tribes was the third season of Survivor.
The season ended when Lee-Yan defeated Benni and Ryley at the Final Tribal Council in a 4-3-2 jury vote. The season featured 20 contestants dubbed as "castaways" marooned on two separate beaches on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. They were divided into three tribes for the first time: the Aztecs in red, the Incans in yellow, and the Mayans in black. On Day 29, the tribes merged into the orange Toteca tribe.
Similar to the pilot season, American Tribes held it's merge at 8. This was primarily due to the resolution of the Aztecs tribe in Episode 9. This was the first season to feature any tribe switch of any kind. It was also the first season to feature three original tribes.
The hidden immunity idol was used again this season, hidden at the merge. No one ever found it.
The season began with 20 castaways without tribes arriving on a beach in Mexico. Three team Captains were randomly selected: Balto (not from Season 1), Mason (not from Season 1), and Lee-Yan. They immediately became the Captains for the three tribes. A schoolyard pick ensued until all but two players were selected. Although the common thought was that these two had been eliminated, they actually joined the game at the tribe resolution. This concept would return in Survivor: Maldives and Survivor: Superstars
