Survivor: Seychelles was the fifth season of Survivor.
The season ended with a deadlocked jury vote at the Finale Tribal Council between Benny, Leo, and Chocolate. Producers deemed this tie "unbreakable" and each winenr was given a third of the prize money. The season featured 20 contestants dubbed as "castaways" marooned on two separate beaches in the Seychelles. They were divided into four tribes: Malabar in maroon, Pagode in brown, Chiens in red, and Astove in black. On Day 15, the Pagode tribe resolved. On Day 24, the Astove tribe resolved. On Day 28, the tribes merged into the skyblue Rovivrus tribe, "Survivor" spelled backwards.
Seychelles' merge followed Season 3's pattern, merging after 12 had been eliminated and only 8 remained. Producers released a statement about the merge: "We haven't set a fixed merge time because we don't want the castaways to use the knowledge of the upcoming merge to base their decisions."
The main twist this season was the return of Benny, Cheesey, Lee-Yan, and Chocolate, the first four winners of the Survivor series. Each was assigned a tribe with four new castaways. Both Lee-Yan and Cheesey were voted out before the merge, but Benny and Chocolate ended up in the final 3, where they shared the victory with new castaway Leo.
This season did not feature the Hidden Immunity Idol.
Tiffani became the first person in the show's history to voluntarily quit. She still became a member of the 9 person jury. Her action became subject to highly negative criticism for two reasons: 1) many people applied for the show but didn't make it and felt they would have made a better castaway than Tiffani. 2) Her choice to quit set a precedent for future quitters.
Some argue that Tiffani's inclusion on the jury should not have been allowed. By modern rules, she would not. Had she not participated in the vote, it would have resulted in a 3-3-2 vote, eliminating Benny from the running. The two jury members who voted Benny's way would then cast their votes live for either Chocolate or Leo.
The tied final vote occurred thrice more in Panama, Sri Lanka, and East Timor. However, the three other seasons featured breakable ties at 4-4-1 votes; the one outlying vote would revote live for a winner. This season remains the only instance of a deadlocked vote. Interestingly, a 3-3-3 vote occurred again in Marshall Islands but that season featured a twist in which finalists could void jury votes, instead resulting in a 3-2-1 vote.
