Survivor: West Africa was the seventieth season of Survivor.
The season ended when Courtney won the title of Sole Survivor, beating Marcel by a 4-3 jury vote at the Final Tribal Council. The season featured 16 contestants dubbed as "castaways" marooned on two separate beaches in the Gambia. They were divided into two tribes: Mali in black and Togo in brown. The tribes were named after West African countries. On Day 16, the tribes merged into the green Timbuktu tribe, named for the capital of Mali.
The main twist this season, or lack thereof, was a return to the basics of Survivor.
Similar to the preceding season, many critics and viewers enjoyed the simplicity of the show. Without heavy reliance on twists or returning players, the season did not stand out amongst others, but it provided the entertainment the public desired.
This season is one of the only to never feature a tribe winning consecutive immunities.
The original location for this season was to be Tanzania, with the title Survivor: East Africa. However, due to budget constraints, filming took place in the same location as the previous season. The logo, however, was not changed and still reflects the Tanzanian flag.
